ThoughtWorks Live 2018 & 2019

In Sept 2018, ThoughtWorks came to Digital Jalebi, for the first time, with an interesting brief to create an engaging experience for their customers for an event themed ‘AI-guided digital revolution’.

After a successful project in 2018 we collaborated with ThoughtWorks for the 2nd time in 2019. This time the theme was how ThoughtWorks can help accelerate Digital fluency for their clients through a live immersive experience.

The requirement was two fold:

  1. To create a digital immersive experience that goes with the theme
  2. To help ThoughtWorks initiate conversation with their customers.

I was new to this and so were the challenges…

The Challenges

  1. The event begins with the MD addressing the guests and talking about the services being offered.  The solution needs to assist the MD in creating an impactful opening to the event.

  2. The solution should engage with the customers during the break. This will be an opportunity for ThoughtWorks to talk in detail about the offerings that were untouched during the main presentation.

  3. The solutions should not disturb the main event flow of the company and any kind of physical installation should be easy to use.

What was my role in solving these?

My Role

  1. As the Lead Designer I was responsible to understand the content of the presentation and translate that into the proposed idea.

  2. After taking a detailed look at the content I created a storyboard that explained exactly how the entire immersive experience will pan out.

  3. On approval by the client I communicated the storyboard to the graphics designer and the engineering team and helped them create assets as envisioned by me.

  4. I monitored the development closely making sure all the outcomes are in sync with the branding guidelines and the storyboard that was agreed upon.

  5. I worked with the fabrication team to set up a mockup of the final product to help the client get an idea of how the final experience would look like.

  6. After the approval, I coordinated with the team to do the final setup at the site.

How did I go ahead with the project?

Understanding Visitor Profile

The primary audience of this event are the corporate level executives and industry leaders who are the primary decision makers of their company. Also, the event is open to Thoughtworks’ employees who would be interested in knowing about the advances in the company.

What was the outcome?

The Outcome

We designed a total of 4 digital experiences for the 2 events. Of these 2 were live stage experiences and the others were interactive installations for the attendees

Live Stage Augmented Storytelling

Live Augmentation

To create an on stage Augmented Reality solution to create an impactful presentation.

Intent

As the MD of ThoughtWorks begins presenting his story of AI-Guided digital revolution, visuals supporting his narrative should be augmented on him and be visible on a large display behind him, thereby creating a unique storytelling experience for their viewers.

Content treatment

The entire storyline of the presentation was discussed in detail and animated scenes were created that supported it. These scenes were played one after the other by our technician. The presenter provided a set of unique cues that helped the technician play a specific scene.

User Interaction

The clients were passive viewers. The entire presentation was orchestrated by the presenter on stage.

Stages of AI

Intent

To help the clients understand and evaluate where their organisations stand on the Artificial Intelligence pyramid and how ThoughtWorks can help them proceed further in this AI journey.

Content treatment

The AI pyramid has 5 levels representing different levels of AI adoption in companies. An augmented reality application was developed to work with the AI pyramid. Everytime an attendee scans a particular level on the pyramid, Information associated to that level for a specific sector is shown to the visitor.

User Interaction

The attendee picks up the iPad placed next to the AI pyramid and points it at any one of the level markers. It then asks the user to point the iPad to empty space around. Once done, a 3D model of either an ATM or a Retail store gets augmented wherever the iPad is pointed. Information regarding that particular level gets displayed either on the ATM screen or on the display window of the retail store.

Intent

To set the stage for the event and provide a peek into the futuristic, data driven world.

Content treatment

2 employees of ThoughtWorks were trained to enact a day-to-day office interaction in a green screen setup. A simulation is created where an AI assistant helps the two in decision making. While doing this they would be teleported to different virtual spaces and their data would be used by the AI assistant to create personalized experiences of them.

User Interaction

The two actors are standing in a green screen enclosure and a feed from this setup is processed, realtime, in a computer and displayed live to the audience.

Intent

To focus on how organizations can build the components of and hence accelerate their journeys to become ‘Modern Digital Businesses’.

Content treatment

The 3 core ideas of the digital fluency model, developed by ThoughtWorks, were converted into explainer videos. They were then projected on an interactive projection wall where the users could browse them at their convenience.

User Interaction

Every video on the video wall is paired to a bluetooth headset. The user wears the headset and presses the play button to begin the video.
